Making Cinnamic Acid

Today we make some Trans-cinnamic acid from benzaldehyde and malonic acid. The reaction is called the Verley-Doebner modification of the Knoevenagel Condensation.

The classic Knoevenagel Condensation is similar to the Aldol Condensation
